NAMI-MN Weekly Legislative Update April 23, 2004

We have heard that the National Lieutenant Governors Association effort to raise awareness (and a flag) about mental illness may be coming to Minnesota on Thursday. The flag project began in May 2002, when NAMI Arkansas arranged for a flag—with the symbol of a beacon from a lighthouse and the slogan "Shine a Light on Mental Health Issues"—to fly over the Arkansas capitol to celebrate Mental Health Month. The flag was hand-painted by Kristy Worthen, age 24. Kristy’s story of living with mental illness became the subject of the book, Journey Not Chosen … Destination Not Known: Living with Bipolar Disorder (August House Publishers, 2001), written by her mother, Mary Worthen. We will let you know if this is something we need people to attend or to comment about.
